A homeowner in Ramona, California contacted us because the appearance of their tile and grout kitchen countertops had diminished with use over time. The wide grout lines had become dark and stained, and the discoloration was made even more conspicuous because parts of the backsplash still looked fresh and new. Grout is porous, which means it absorbs food and drink spills, oils, and other substances. For a high-use area, such as this kitchen countertop, we needed to take preventative measures to inhibit contaminants from getting back into those grout lines.
First, we masked and protected the surfaces surrounding our work area. Then, we power scrubbed and steam cleaned the tile and grout to remove the deeply embedded contaminants.
Although the countertop had been sanitized, the appearance of the grout lines was still not completely consistent with the newer looking backsplash. We resolved this problem by applying a grout colorant.
